Sony Mainboard Dip Switches What Are They Used For?

Posted in Desktop Parts on March 30th, 2011 by Admin

When performing a repair on a Sony laptop, you may have noticed some DIP switches on certain Sony laptop systemboards. But what are DIP switches and what are they used for?

DIP switches get their name for an acronym: Dual-line Input Package. They are essentially a bank of switches that control the connection of certain circuits on the Sony mainboard. Some common uses of DIP switches are remote controls, where the switches can be used to send and receive a unique signal to avoid interference with other remote devices.

When it comes to their use in Sony laptop parts, however, DIP switches are often used on the mainboard. They can have a variety of uses. One common use is to set the clock speed and operating parameters of the CPU. If one mainboard is designed to work with multiple processor types, for example, setting the DIP switches can change the voltage and clock speed to accommodate more than one type of CPU. They are also used when multiple LCD Screens are used on a model and resolutions or other parameters are different. If these settings are required, make sure you get the switch information from your spare parts supplier.

Over the past few years, DIP switches have become much less common, particularly in laptops, as limited space has caused manufacturers to do away with any components that are not essential. Also, issues such as IRQ conflicts have become much less common with modern hardware and software, eliminating the need for these types of uses.

So is there any reason to change the DIP switch settings on your Sony laptop mainboard? In almost every case, the answer is no. Mainboards ship from the factory pre-configured, so there is essentially no reason to change them unless you have a very specific instruction to do so, replacing your mainboard or doing some other type of mainboard repair.

HP Pavilion dm4t Series Laptop Review

Posted in Desktop Parts on March 29th, 2011 by Admin

The HP Pavilion dm4t series is a bit of a departure from previous HP designs. Whereas many earlier models featured flashy designs with a number of extra bells and whistles, the dm4t seems to aim for a more streamlined approach. It has excellent power under the hood, and battery life is very impressive as well, making it a well-rounded laptop.

The dm4t is powered by a very fast 2.4 GHz Intel Core i5 processor, one of the newest on the market as of this writing, which gives it enough power to handle most tasks a user can throw at it. 4 GB of RAM are included, and the customization options allow buyers to upgrade the memory at purchase, or they can add more later if they wish.

HP touts the dm4t as an entertainment laptop, drawing attention to its bright screen and DVD drive and excellent sound as a machine built for multimedia. While it does an admirable job at these tasks, the lack of a dedicated graphics processor makes it a poor choice for gaming and even a low-end processor is one of the HP laptop parts that might have given it a bit more multimedia muscle than the integrated Intel GMA processor it includes. This is probably the only major weakness of the machine, however, and won’t be a major issue for those not concerned with gaming.

As mentioned, the design of the HP Pavilion dm4t is very streamlined. Instead of adding a large number of dedicated buttons for tasks such as email and web browsing, HP chose to keep the keyboard and trackpad surface very simple, perhaps borrowing from the laptop keyboards styles of Apple and Sony. The result is a laptop that is more fun to use, and feels more like a machine for serious work and play.

With so many great features, the HP Pavilion dm4t can certainly handle a wide variety of tasks. Its 4 or more hours of battery life exceeds that of many laptop batteries and its lightweight 4.4 pound design should make it great for portability. Even the compact size of HP laptop AC adapters has been improved, making the entire unit more portability. All of this combines to make the dm4t an excellent value for its low price.

What is Data Migration?

Posted in Hard Drives on March 25th, 2011 by Admin

When a data recovery service is mentioned, most people think of hard drive failure, data corruption and missing or deleted files. However, a recovery service, like The Data Rescue Center, can offer more than just data recovery. One of those services is data migration. So, what is data migration and why might it be needed?

Data migration is the process of moving data from one media to another. It may be moving from one hard drive to another, from one computer to a new one, or from one form of media to a different kind. For example, you might have family movies recorded on a VHS tape and want to transfer them to a DVD to protect them from loss due to aging or to be able to share them with family and friends.

Another reason for data migration is that some older technologies are no longer in use. If data was stored on floppies, Zip or Jaz drives or obsolete SCSI hard drives, new computers may not be able to access them anymore. Transferring these files often requires special equipment. While it might be possible for individuals to do this themselves, it would not be prudent to buy special equipment that is going to be used one time and then scrapped. Furthermore, the equipment available at retail stores is usually not professional quality and the results may not be acceptable.

An additional benefit of migration is having important data recovery information available in the event of a drive failure. Because portable computers are very susceptible to damage, the success of notebook data recovery is improved with migrated data.
