Top Five Battery Drainers

Posted in Desktop Parts on June 29th, 2010 by Admin

Battery life is by no means a fixed number. Your battery may say it lasts for 6 hours, but depending on how you use your machine that number can be cut by more than half. So what are the most notorious battery drainers on your machine?

The biggest drain on your laptop’s battery life is external devices. That USB mouse, that Flash drive, your nice big external hard drive or DVD drive, they all pull their power from your battery right through the USB port. If you know you have limited battery life and need to get something done, remove everything you can, and save them for when you get near an outlet.

Speaking of DVD drives, if you have an optical drive on your machine, make sure that there are no CDs or DVDs in it. The constant spinning of that drive will quickly drain your battery, leaving you high and dry.

One setting users often don’t think to change can have a huge effect on your battery’s life. By simply turning down the brightness on your laptop LCD panel, you can cut down a large portion of the drain on your machine. Just as it is with your home desktop, the chief flow of power in your machine goes to powering your monitor. The less it needs to project, the more battery you will have to keep your system running that much longer.

Another item people often don’t think to disable is the Wireless network card. If you aren’t actively using your internet connection, it will still search for and maintain a signal connection in the background, constantly draining your battery power to do so. Disabling your network card will expand your battery’s longevity by a very considerable amount.

Lastly, and perhaps somewhat obvious, is turn off the sound. If you’re on battery power and you need the most out of your machine, go ahead and mute your machine. It might be relaxing to work with a little background music, but turning those speakers off will help you to squeeze all the life you can out of a dwindling laptop battery.

For those of you with Apple laptop batteries, you may also want to keep an eye on your battery’s onboard charge indicator to know when your battery is low. This is especially important if you have a spare battery in your bag, as you can check the remaining charge on the battery before a long trip. For those of you who use HP, Sony, Dell, Toshiba, or Asus laptop batteries, or any other brand, you may want to visit an online laptop spare parts retailer and look for batteries with similar on board charge indicators. In some cases the OEM batteries did not include this feature, but some 3rd party compatible batteries include this feature.

Computer Question About Web Browser Words Overlapping

Posted in Sound Cards on June 24th, 2010 by Admin

This latest computer question & answer comes from Mavis Wood who writes:
“I have PeoplePC news in my Bookmarks, and I read that news every day.  But each category headline has the words “Back to Top” super-imposed on it.  That makes the headline very difficult to read.  My computer geek doesn’t know how to erase that [...]

Hi-Res Graphics Mind Meld

Posted in Sound Cards on June 22nd, 2010 by Admin

I read a description of how memory addressing for the hi-resolution screen works three times, each time from a different source.  The first two times my brain simply melted before such a byzantine structure.  The third time it finally clicked.  Surely this had something to do with it being my third attempt to grasp the concept, but I believe even more of it had to do with the third source’s description being the most clear, well-written and well-illustrated.

That third source is “Applesoft BASIC Subroutines & Secrets” by Jeanette Sullivan and David Sullivan. It appears to be an excellent book all around.  Below are scans of the two pages on hi-res memory addressing, to assist anyone else puzzling out the same issue:

The book also includes a nifty little BASIC program that will compute the address of any particular block, and lays out the formula the program uses, further reinforcing how the addressing works.  Scans of that are below.

In assembly programming news, “Assembly Language for the Applesoft Programmer” continues its traditional of clear writing/explanations and annoying typos in listings.  I’m also going through Don Lancaster’s “Assembly Cookbook for the Apple II/IIe” — Lancaster completely skips over the basics (he basically waves his finger at you and says ‘Don’t you dare think of using an assembler until you’ve learned to code 100s of lines of machine language on your own’), but has lots of opinionated advice on surrounding aspects of assembly.  I’m learning, slow but steady.

Now you can call me Woody!

No it’s not Buzz Lightyear’s best friend. But if you would have this kind of computer case then Woody would definitely be the perfect name for it.

Can’t get enough of your wooden furniture? Then try incorporating the classic wood material with your state-of-the-art computer. It is not just the tables and chairs that can be as elegant as this, right? Showcase this not only to your fellow geeks but also to everyone who sees themselves as the elite and the elegant.  For sure, your grandfather would love to have this in his library. Now this is something that will be worth buying by the time it’s already antique.
