What do you know about data recovery services

Posted in Hard Drives on April 30th, 2010 by Admin

Data is an important and integral aspect of any business’s long-term strategy. Issues such as information life cycle management, e-discovery and enterprise content management systems hinge on one common denominator: data. Data storage and management is essential for business continuity and litigation matters.

Data is nevertheless constantly at threat. This threat is presented in a number of ways. Viruses present one danger posed to data. These malicious programs have the capacity to damage, compromise or erase a business’s data. Physical damage to data storage facilities is another danger posed to data storage and recovery. Fires and flooding fall under this category. Another little known threat is encryption. This technology is a double edged sword especially when mishandled and as a result decryption must be carried out by a data recovery expert in a data recovery lab.

These dangers exemplify the exceptional need for emergency data recovery in the event of one of the mentioned dangers. Data is increasingly becoming the most important asset any company has and as such, data storage, management and recovery have become an important management aspect. Most companies hire a data recovery specialist or company to handle their data recovery needs. In litigation, e-discovery is increasingly becoming the main method of information discovery. This means companies that need to plan for any eventuality have to develop e-storage, e-management and e-recovery policies by which they can ensure continuity in their information life cycle.

In the event that data on a storage medium is lost, damaged or destroyed, an emergency data recovery process must be initiated. The process begins by sending the damaged or corrupted storage medium to a data recovery lab. Here, a data recovery expert will determine whether it is a hardware or logical (non-hardware) issue. If it is a hardware issue, they will simply repair the hardware and restore access to the data. Logical issues are more complex and require a non-hardware data recovery specialist. This may involve overwritten data, corrupt file systems or online data recovery. In this instance, they will use the wide array of tools and techniques they have to recover the data.

There are a number of emerging trends that are anticipated to affect data recovery services. Cloud computing is one such emerging trend. It involves the integration of a network of servers across the globe to create one shared super computer. The development of cloud computing has seen many companies move their on-site data storage to not only off-site/remote areas but to the cloud as well. Data disaster recovery experts are still writing the book on this issue as multiple scenarios emerge.

Another emerging trend in the world of data recovery is encryption. Today, many companies have within their information management policies an encryption clause. Encryption has therefore become a near prerequisite for any business. However, this very safety device is what proves a sticking point in the event of a hardware or software failure. It is essential, consequently, for companies to include data disaster recovery within their information management strategy as a matter of course.

This case is the bomb!

Do not call the bomb squad just yet. Don’t you want to experience how to diffuse a nuclear bomb just like Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible or any other spy flicks that you’ve watched? Now here is your chance to at least roleplay and act like a spy. Each and every time that you need to fix something inside your computer, imagine that you have to cut the red wire or whatever color it is that you need to nip just to stop the timer from running.

Hide this away from your neighbor especially if they are suspecting you as a terrorist. It is likely that they would call the police and get caught for hiding a deadly weapon inside your room.

PCMCIA Cards, Cardbus and ExpressCards – What exactly is the difference?

Posted in Desktop Parts on April 28th, 2010 by Admin

PCMCIA, Cardbus and ExpressCards are similar technologies that are very easy confuse with one another. In fact, many experienced computer users still get the standards confused. Let us try to shed some light on the differences between these three standards, and eliminate some of the confusion.

PCMCIA

PCMCIA stands for Personal Computer Memory Card International Association, the organization which standardized the format. It is an interface for connecting external memory cards, modems, and other devices to a laptop as a means of expansion. It later began to be referred to as “PC Card” instead of its long acronym.

The first cards were Type I cards, which had a 16-bit interface and were 3.3 mm thick. These Type I cards were prevalent on many of the early Compaq laptop systemboards. Type II cards are somewhat thicker, at 5.5 mm, and use either a 16-bit or 32-bit interface. Common Type II devices are modems and network cards, which often have to use a dongle, as their height does not support a full-size jack. Type III cards and devices are even thicker, at 10.5 mm thick, and can support full-size connectors without dongles and even hard disk drive cards. Type II Cards were the standard size of PCMCIA Card for some time before they were replaced by CardBus.

CardBus

CardBus is the successor to PCMCIA. In fact, it is the name used for cards and devices that supported the PCMCIA 5.0 or later specification. It has much in common with the PCI bus on a desktop computer, as it provides a 32-bit, 33 MHz PCI bus with a smaller form factor designed for laptops and notebooks. Most CardBus slots support earlier PCMCIA devices, but CardBus devices can not be inserted into older slots, as they are notched differently. If these newer cards are forced into the older PCMCIA slots, it can cause damage to the card slots and a relatively expensive laptop repair.

ExpressCard

ExpressCard is the latest successor to be developed by the PCMCIA organization. It was introduced in 2003 to replace earlier form factors. There are two form factors included in the specification that are used on laptop systemboards; Expresscard/34, which is 34 mm wide, and ExpressCard/54, which is 54 mm wide. ExpressCard/54 cards can be rectangular or L-shaped, supporting either 26 pins or 68 pins. ExpressCard/54 slots are often used on HP laptop systemboards to support a remote that conveniently hides away in the slot. The ExpressCard interface allows for much more bandwidth than previous technologies, up to 2Gbit/s. This allows users to connect high-speed disk drives and other devices that need more bandwidth to operate effectively.

Understanding the progression of these three technologies will hopefully clarify their differences and applications. Currently, ExpressCard slots offer the best performance for external devices, but it will likely be replaced by a faster technology in the future as well.

Long live the Star Wars!

case14

Star Wars afficionados would die to have this kind of computer case. The only thing missing is you in your Luke Skywalker’s costume while you sit down in front of your screen. Well R2D2 isn’t going anywhere.  Probably he would wait for another computer case where his fellow Star Wars robot C3PO will be showcased.

Ken Kirby, the mastermind of this awesome computer case, really made a great decision to have R2D2 as his model. Small, cool, and functional. When it was built, P4 was still the latest processor back then. Hmmm..Wonder how R2D2 would work with the Octa Core?

Dim LCD Displays

Posted in Laptop on April 11th, 2010 by Admin

Many people call me to get a replacement LCD or bulb since their LCD is dim. There are several problems that can cause this but it is rarely the LCD or bulb that is bad. The main problem is that power is not getting to the backlight inside the LCD.

To find where the loss of power occurs, you need to use a volt meter.  First, check the voltage coming out of the ribbon cable from the motherboard. If you are getting current, move to the FL Inverter board. You should get 6 volts coming out of the inverter. If the voltage is coming through the inverter, then the problem is with the LCD. If the voltage does not come through the ribbon cable, it is defective, this can be caused by a cut in the cable. If the power comes through the cable but not the inverter, then the inverter is bad. This is usually caused by a bad transformer on the board. However, if the voltage is coming through the cable and the board, then the LCD backlight is bad and the LCD will need to be replaced since backlight bulbs are not usually sold separately.

It is important to make sure where the probably is coming from. You do not want to buy an expensive LCD when you don’t need one. An additional word of warning, you can get electrocted if your ribbon cable is damages so inspect the area carefully.

Linux sucks – Keyboard Shortcuts

Posted in Motherboards on April 9th, 2010 by Admin

The default keyboard shortcuts in Linux suck*. The shortcut for locking the screen is ctrl+alt+L, which sounds reasonable until you load up emacs and try to use the “previous buffer” shortcut (which happens to be ctrl+alt+L). There are other shortcuts that use ctrl+alt+[letter] too.  All of these shortcuts should use the “Windows” key by default.  It’s been years since I’ve seen a keyboard that didn’t have a Windows key, and on Windows many shortcuts do use the Windows key.  It also seems pretty stupid that the Windows key doesn’t bring up my Applications menu by default.

You’d think the solution would be simple: System->Preferences->Keyboard Shortcuts, but you’d be wrong.  The Windows key can’t be treated as a modifier key – you can’t set a shortcut to be “Super+L” (the Windows key is called Super for some reason).  If you try to set a shortcut to e.g. the Windows key and D, you’ll just end up with just the Windows key as your shortcut.  I’ve found that for Compiz shortcuts, the Windows key is correctly treated as a modifier, but all the GNOME stuff (in particular, locking the screen) treats it incorrectly.

Punishing users because you don’t like a logo sucks.

*in this particular case, my complaint may very be specific to Ubuntu + GNOME, but see my statement in my original post explaining why I still blame “Linux”
