Linux sucks – Getting Skype working

Posted in Motherboards on January 31st, 2010 by Admin

Months after intially installing Skype, I finally got it to work properly (i.e. not conflict with music players / YouTube / etc).  It took way too much Googling and I spent a lot of time trying suggestions that ended up not working, but eventually I found a solution (full thread) on the Ubuntu Forums that almost works. These are the steps that actually worked for me:

  1. Put this into ~/.asoundrc (create the file if it doesn’t exist):
    pcm.skypeout
    {
        type plug
        slave.pcm "dmix"
    }
    ctl.skypeout
    {
        type hw
        card 0
    }
    pcm.skypein
    {
        type plug
        slave.pcm "dsnoop"
    }
    ctl.skypein
    {
        type hw
        card 0
    }
  2. Edit /etc/pulse/default.pa as root (I can’t figure out a “nice” way to do this from the GUI, but in a terminal you could try “sudo gedit /etc/pulse/default.pa” – I used vim).
    1. Comment out “load-module module-hal-detect”
    2. Find the “module-alsa-sink” and “module-alsa-source” sections and add these two lines:
      load-module module-alsa-sink device=dmix sink_name=output
      load-module module-alsa-source device=hw:0,0

      On my Desktop PC, I used “device=hw:SB,0″ rather than “device=hw:0,0″.

      I’ve attached a patch that you can use to automate this (“sudo patch -p0 -d /etc/pulse < default.pa.diff”)

  3. Restart PulseAudio (or reboot).  You can restart PulseAudio by running this in a terminal:
    killall pulseaudio && pulseaudio &

    I got some error messages, but you can ignore them.

  4. Try Skype.  If it still isn’t playing nice with other applications, go to the Sound Devices section in Skype’s settings and change “Sound In” to skypein, and “Sound Out” and “Ringing” to skypeout.
  5. If Skype still isn’t working, go back to step 2, but instead of “hw:0,0″, try other values like “hw:SB,0″; if that doesn’t work, you’re going to need to do some more Googling.

There are three things that suck:

  • It doesn’t work out of the box
  • There is no obvious way to edit a config file in /etc (this requires root privileges, but “Text Editor” doesn’t use the graphical sudo functionality to get the privileges it needs)
  • Following this advice means that in a future upgrade (maybe to 8.10, for example) you risk having to merge differences between your hacked “default.pa” and the maintainer’s version; this would be unreasonably difficult for most people to understand.

Intel 82801GB ICH7 – High Definition Audio [A1 ]—— intel 82801GB ICH7 chipsets that INTEL ICH7 South Bridge chip inside the model, A1 means that South Bridge chip stepper type, with the back of HIGH DEFINITION AUDIO means a board by the ICH7 southbridge, and the composition of the sound card HD audio chip, which is commonly known as the meaning of high fidelity audio.

The driver can not just look at the model of sound card chip, sometimes do not work, it may be because the chassis or AC97 front audio wiring caused when the standard, if even that is behind the motherboard comes with MIC port does not work, you need check the HD’s Control Panel settings, is an orange speaker icon in the lower right corner, double-click will open the Audio Control Panel after, click on the “Audio I / O” option, so the English interface, select the five in the middle of that, and then These images point out a pattern like a little wrench button, a dialog box reads out connection settings, from top to bottom a total of three options, keep in mind the top “Disable front panel jack detection” must be checked , in the second before the hook is best to remove, because the second meaning is the same front and rear can not use, then check the “mixer” option in front of all MIC and MIC-related can not be muted. End sound card control panel settings and then check the WINDOWS own audio volume adjustment, the microphone of the options are not elected are not silent on it, is the lower right corner of the system comes with the black speaker icon, this I do not think I have to say the. (Usually the sound card driver, as long as there is a normal output or input on and drive does not matter, and set the finished on it

Can I simply spray paint over a computer case?

Posted in Computer Cases on January 23rd, 2010 by Admin

I have a black computer case and I want it red. I wouldn’t have to sand it down or anything right?

I don’t see you having to sand it. I do suggest that you gut it before you spray it. Liquid will ruin your computer. If you don’t know how to do so or put a computer back together, I suggest not using spray paint. Computer cases are relatively inexpensive now-a-days. You can go to a Comp USA or Best Buy and they can switch your case for you.

How to Get Cheap Mobile Home Insurance in Florida

Because hurricanes, floods, fires, and burglaries are on the rise in Florida, mobile home insurance is no longer a luxury, it’s a necessity. Here’s how to get cheap mobile home insurance in Florida.

Mobile Home Insurance

Standard mobile home insurance includes the following coverages:

Structure coverage – This pays to replace or repair your mobile home, and other structures like a detached garage, when they’ve been damaged or destroyed by fire, plumbing leaks, vandalism, or storms. Standard policies do not cover damage caused by floods, so you’ll need to purchase extra insurance if you want flood coverage.

Personal property coverage – This pays to replace your personal property – electronics, clothing, furniture, bicycles, sports equipment, tools, etc. – when they’ve been damaged or destroyed by fire, plumbing leaks, vandalism, or storms. Standard policies limit the amount of coverage for expensive items like jewelry, furs, collections, and antiques, so you’ll need to get additional insurance for these.

Additional living expense coverage – This pays your additional living expenses when your mobile home is uninhabitable and is being repaired. This coverage pays your hotels bills, restaurant bills, and other additional expenses.

Libility coverage - This pays for medical claims, property damage expenses, and legal fees if you or your family injure another person or damage their property.

Trip collision coverage - This pays to repair or replace your mobile home when it’s been damaged when you move it to a new location.

Emergency removal coverage – This pays to move your mobile home when it’s being threatened by an approaching fire, hurricane, or other perils.

Loss assessment coverage – This pays your share of losses assessed by your association.

How to Get Cheap Florida Mobile Home Insurance

The cost for mobile home insurance can vary by hundreds of dollars from one company to another, so the first thing you should do is get quotes from different companies see which company has the cheapest rate. The best place to do this is at an insurance comparison website where you can get multiple quotes by filling out a simple questionnaire with information about your mobile home and the amount of insurance you want.

In order to get the cheapest insurance premium, request the highest deductible you can afford and get all the discounts you’re eligible for when you fill in the questionnaire.

As a beginner, repairing your computer can be a very tedious task. You have to ask yourself which part of the computer needs repair since computers can have a single error or multiple problems that needs to be solved. Here are the simplest questions:

1. Is it on? – If your computer does not turn on, you have to check if it is plugged and also check if the surge protector (if any) is plugged on as well.
2. Is it on but producing a strange error message? – This may be a software problem. Windows are sometimes developing errors over time, which may not be your problem, but nevertheless, it needs to be addressed.

How to Replace a DC-In Harness on the Sony VGN-FS Series

Posted in Desktop Parts on January 14th, 2010 by Admin

When your laptop begins having problems charging or running on your AC adapter, a fairly common cause of this condition can be the DC-in harness of your machine. This is the port that your AC adapter plugs into which carries the electrical current from your adapter to your Sony laptop system board and from there to your battery and other components of your machine.

If your DC-in harness has broken or come out of place, the DC jack itself becomes unseated, which compromises the connection to your laptop system board. Your first step in repairing this condition will be to contact an online laptop parts supplier to obtain a new harness for your machine. The specific part number for your part will be 1-963-519-11. This part will consist of a Sony DC jack with a harness. Once you have the appropriate DC harness, you can either complete the repair yourself, or contact a laptop repair service for assistance.

On the Sony Vaio FS series machines, the DC Jack is on a harness that unplugs directly from the Sony laptop systemboard. For replacement the jack is housed in the palmrest towards the rear of the machine. You will need to remove the keyboard, and then remove screws holding the palmrest to the bottom case assembly. Be careful to disconnect all the touchpad cabling and the DC jack harness cable going from the palmrest to the systemboard before removing the palmrest entirely. Once you have the palmrest off, remove the DC Jack harness by snapping it out of the palmrest and replace it with a new one. Reconnect all the cables and re-install the palmrest, keyboard and appropriate screws that were removed earlier. Once this is accomplished, your machine should be back up and running with no problems at all. If there are other problems with the function of your machine at the same time however, there may be further damage to other components of your machine. If you notice other problems with your system, consult a computer repair shop for further assistance.
